Several people have looked at the idea of sending only updates to pages. As far as we know, rproxy is the first to achieve this without requiring the entire old file on the server side to generate the differences.

Potential benefits of delta encoding and data compression for HTTP (Corrected version). Surveys web traffic through corporate networks as of 1996, has good statistics on what an ideal compression/delta coding system could achieve and similar things.
